Sarawak's oldest national park - Bako National Park is located in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, in East Malaysia. It covers the tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula at the mouth of Kuching Rivers and Bako.

Overview

Bako National Park is gazette in the year of 1957. Being the oldest national park in Sarawak, it is quite surprised to be one of the smallest national parks in Sarawak. This amazing national park has been featured in the popular reality show naming the The Amazing Race Asia 1 as the final pit stop. One of the definite features of Bako National Park is the rugged rocky headland along with steep cliffs where visitors can overlook the South China Sea there. The scenery in the park is mesmerizing with many spectacular species of flora and fauna. Various kinds of plants and vegetations such as beach vegetation and cliff vegetation can be seen around. Besides, one of the famous fauna in the park is the proboscis monkeys or Dutchman. There are of course, other wildlife that are to be seen around in the park including Borneo bearded pigs, monitor lizards, mouse deers, snakes and etc. The national park acts as a home to over 150 species of birds too.

There are many treks and trails that you can choose from to be included in your list of activities in the Bako National Park. All trails possess different names and lengths and so it is not a difficult task to select the trail that best fit you. In accommodation wise, there are quite a number of options available. It is all depends on the size of the group. There are two types of Forest Lodge where it is suitable for 2-3 persons and there is a Forest Hostel that provides for 4 persons. The best way to stay a night or two in the park is none other than camping. There is a camping site there but camping equipments are not provided, thus, remember to bring your own if you decided to camp down there.

After the wildlife and nature experience, you may want to go for a shopping spree. The best place to go is definitely get back to the city in Kuching where numbers of shopping malls awaiting you. Uncountable types of brand outlets are available in most of the shopping malls.

Transport

From Kuching, take Petra Jaya Bus No. 6 or any ordinary mini buses to Kampung Bako (Bako Village). Then, charter a boat to reach Bako National Park. The boat ride will take an estimated time of 35 minutes.
